Partnering up with the ToChina Hub, CMAS has developed the ChinaMed research agenda coordinated by Enrico Fardella and Andrea Ghiselli.

ChinaMed was created to highlight the increasingly symbiotic relationship between China and the Mediterranean region. Chinas economic and commercial rise during the 1990s, especially following its accession to the World Trade Organization in 2001, has had an enormous impact on the maritime networks that connect the Asian and the European markets. The Mediterranean region has consequently been transformed into a strategic hub for the flow of goods and capital. This fact is further highlighted by its position within the strategic plan of the Euro-Asiatic relationship the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) launched by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the end of 2013.

The ChinaMed project aims to analyze this dynamic through the collection and elaboration of quantitative and qualitative data that has been shared on the dedicated website. The quantitative component is based on 11 sets of data that shed light on, in a diachronic way, different features of the ChinaMed relationship such as Chinas ranking as a commercial partner between the Mediterranean countries, the dependence of these countries on the Chinese market, and the importance of the region to Chinas energy security.

Our research team, composed of nine researchers with specific linguistic and technical competences on the relationship between China and the Mediterranean region, conducts solid qualitative research aimed at the collection, selection, and analysis of various media and academic sources that focus on the ChinaMed relationship. This research is published in English through the ChinaMed Bulletin, a monthly report on the viewpoints of different Chinese and regional commentators about the most significant events that have occurred within the context of the ChinaMed relationship. It also includes clear and detailed analyses prepared by the ChinaMed team on specific topics.

ChinaMed aspires to contribute to the academic and media debates at both the national and international level. This goal is continuously furthered by the numerous articles published by its researchers - in the international media as much as in the main academic journals in the field and by several conferences and lectures organized both in China and Italy on the topic.
